CategoriesCar Engine historyBy: Ashoke Banerjee, Sun Jan 24th, 2010 The Car Engine, or the internal combustion engine as it has been commonly called revolutionized not only the automobile, but transportation in general. This great invention enabled us to travel over distances that we could never have thought of traversing before. There were many great people that contributed to the development of the car engine as we know it today. In fact rocket engines which were also internally combustible engines were invented by the Chinese and Mongols 500 years before they were out into application by the west. This speaks volumes of their resourcefullness. The main part of developing one in the west is that it was always hindered by the practical application of being able to market it on a volume scale and this was always hindered by the fact that to get the energy to really make it work on a grand scale they needed a good energy source, and petroleum drilling technology didn't really develop until the mid 19th centruury, but when they finally had the technology to start tapping into the worlds major oil reserves the technology blossomed. Most people do not know that the first car was invented by Karl Benz who was the founder of the Mercedes Benz company. In fact the patent for this first vehicle also had the car engine as one of its main components. Of course it was a very primitive design compared to later models, but it set the stage for the many other major car designs that used most of this basic internal design pattern. This patent was issued to Benz in the year 1886. It must have been a very weird site back then for most people to see such a vehicle going through town. Most would have wondered what actually powered thsi vehicle and kept it moving forward. You guessed it, it was the car engine or internal combustible engine.
